I found myself watching High School Musical 2 yesterday. Yes, my kids were watching it, too.
A couple of weekends ago, I was watching A Cinderella Story and Another Cinderella Story with my daughter.
I find myself singing along with all the Disney Channel stars. I know; it is sad, but it is just so addictive. I sing along with Miley, the Jonas Brothers, and even though they are on Nickelodeon, I sing along to Sebastian’s favorite CD—The Naked Brother’s Band.
I even watch The Secret Life of the American Teenager. This show is as cheesy as you can get, but I tune in every week to watch it with my daughter. It is kind of like our girl time. Meanwhile, Josh, Jacob, and Sebastian usually play cards at the kitchen table during this time.
I don’t remember the teen movies that I grew up watching being cheesy. Well, not that cheesy. I could (and still can) watch The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Say Anything, and all the other classic 1980’s teen movies over and over again. Not to mention Grease, even though that was made in the ‘70s.
Oh, and who does not love Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?
Even though The Goonies and The Sandlot are not your typical teen movies, I think they deserve mentioning. In fact, The Goonies was the first movie I went to see without an adult present. I went with my cousins that were several years older, but I never will forget that “I feel so grown-up feeling” even though I was just 10 years old.
Anyway, last night my daughter was waiting patiently for the premier of Sonny With a Chance to come on. It had Jo from The Facts of Life on it, so I had to watch it.
Somehow my desire to provide my children with positive entertainment has warped my own sense of what is good entertainment. Does Disney put subliminal messages in their shows to make parents keep the TV tuned in to their channel even when the kiddies are not around? Surely, they do.
I refuse to believe otherwise.
I know exactly what you mean!
Kids these days don’t know what quality entertainment is, in my opinion…1980’s teen movies are/were sooo much better. Although I’m happy to see the musical movie montage is still in vogue.
Advertising companies and popular culture are still spoofing Risky Business and The Breakfast Club. So they trump the new school. 😛
Goonie’s & Sandlot are a major fav’ of mine, as well as Stand by Me, Man in the Moon, and Dont Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead…They just dont make them the same anymore. aaahhh the good ol’ times.
